Making Self-Defense Compulsory in School Subjects

By Ashutosh Jaiswal, Taekwondo Coach at Valorous Taekwondo Academy

In today’s ever-changing world, the safety and well-being of our children remain paramount. As a Taekwondo coach at Valorous Taekwondo Academy, I firmly believe that empowering students with self-defense skills is not only beneficial but also essential. To achieve this goal, I advocate for making self-defense training a compulsory part of school subjects.

The Need for Self-Defense Education:

In recent times, society has witnessed an increase in violence and incidents of bullying, leaving young individuals vulnerable and scared. Schools are meant to be safe havens for learning, but the reality is that even schools are not immune to such issues. Consequently, there is an urgent need to equip students with the tools to protect themselves physically and mentally.

Self-defense education instills a sense of confidence, discipline, and empowerment among students. It not only prepares them to handle physical threats but also promotes mental resilience, assertiveness, and a greater understanding of personal boundaries. By integrating self-defense training into school curricula, we can foster an environment where students feel safer, more confident, and better prepared to face challenges both inside and outside the school premises.

Why Taekwondo?

Taekwondo, a Korean martial art, is an ideal choice for self-defense education in schools. Known for its emphasis on kicking techniques, Taekwondo offers a unique combination of physical fitness, self-discipline, and practical self-defense tactics. Moreover, Taekwondo’s core principles – courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit – align perfectly with the values that schools aim to instill in their students.

At Valorous Taekwondo Academy, we have witnessed the transformative power of Taekwondo in the lives of our students. From improved concentration and academic performance to better self-esteem and conflict resolution skills, Taekwondo contributes significantly to the holistic development of young minds.

Making Self-Defense Compulsory in School Subjects:

By making self-defense training a mandatory part of school subjects, we can ensure that all students have equal access to this invaluable knowledge. Just like physical education or mathematics, self-defense should become an integral part of a child’s education journey.

To achieve this, I propose the following steps:

  1. Collaboration with Education Authorities: Taekwondo academies, schools, and educational authorities should collaborate to create comprehensive self-defense modules that can be integrated into the school syllabus.

  2. Certified Instructors: Schools should hire certified self-defense instructors to provide professional training to students. My team at Valorous Taekwondo Academy is more than willing to support schools in this endeavor.

  3. Periodic Assessments: Regular assessments should be conducted to measure the progress and effectiveness of self-defense education in schools.

Take Action Now:

Together, we can create a safer and more confident generation. I urge schools, parents, and education authorities to join hands in making self-defense education compulsory in school subjects. By doing so, we empower our children with the skills and knowledge they need to face life’s challenges head-on.
